Killer on the Loose (2015)

From Witching Season Films comes Killer on the Loose which is part of the Witching Season anthology.

Directed by Michael Ballif.

Starring Hailey Nebeker, James Morris and Autumn Russell.

“An escaped killer lurks in the shadows of an isolated home on Halloween night.”

If you want something that will get you into the Halloween spirit that little bit early, Killer on the Loose has you covered. Introductory shots of a seemly desolate town during Halloween season are accompanied by an equally eerie track that seem to replicate a wonderful idea of a hauntingly cold October.

We’re kept in suspense, following a girl who’s being chased by an unseen character. The use of darkness, and empty looking spaces works in this short’s favour, adding to the unknown aspect. You can certainly feel sympathy for the female we’re following, her confusion and frustration.

The short treats us to a Halloween aesthetic that’s a treat on the eyes, and I feel that horror fans alike can agree on that. The perfect setting for a slasher. I was getting some serious Halloween and Trick ‘r Treat vibes from the short, not just because of the set up, but with some of the camera work and the scene direction. Also, something about mask wearing characters really gives me the shudders.

Throughout, I have questions but I enjoy when questions are raised, keeping me more invested into the story. Some excellent camera work used and the music (from Randin Graves) that aided the suspense of the chase was incredibly well timed together. It’s a really nicely put together short, and it’s definitely enjoyable to watch. Some really great storytelling and some wonderful acting especially from Hailey Nebeker.

The twist at the end… I’ll leave you guys to check that one out yourselves. You won’t regret it! 5 skulls! ☠☠☠☠☠
